Firearms

Firearm permit applications can be completed online through the Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS). This system has been mandated by the Governor’s Office to expedite the application process making it more applicant driven.

FEES (payable PRIOR to processing application):

Initial ID card:  $50.00 
Permits to purchase:     $25.00 each  + online fee: Criminal Background Check $21
Replacement ID cards:  No Charge  +  Online Fee: Criminal Background Check $21

APPLICATION TIPS

  • Enter your name as it appears on your driver’s license or official government issued ID. Your Firearms ID card and permits need to match. Applicants for a Firearms ID card must be 18 years of age.
  • You are required to supply 2 references. You will need their names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Family members can be references.
  • All correspondence to you and your references will come via e-mail from no-reply@njportal.com.
  • Prior to submitting your application ensure that all information is correct on the “Review Page.” You will NOT be able to make any changes after submittal and will have to reapply.
  • Application fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
  • We recommend that you print a copy of both the confirmation page and application for your records.
  • Once the background check is complete, we will call you and advise that your ID and/or permits have been approved.

If this is your first time applying:

  • You will have to make an appointment to be fingerprinted. Once your application is submitted The website address and phone number are listed on the form. Payment is due at the time of making an appointment.

If you are applying for a replacement ID card or permit to purchase:

  • Prior to submitting the application you will be prompted to complete the Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) check/212A form. A fee of $21.00 is due at this time.
